Growing up
Year 2
Unit Overview
In this unit, children are introduced to the processes of growth in animals. There are introduced to the term “offspring” for the f irst time. Children will identify that “offspring” refers to an animal’s young. Children will be able to identify an animal and its offspring through sorting and matching activities. They will also look at a life cycle for the first time and explore the stages in the life cycle of a human. Children will recap the key characteristics of a mammal and be reminded that humans are mammals. They will explore simple life cycles of a range of mammals. Children will be introduced to the term “adolescent” rather than “teenager” when describing other mammals. They will look at the life cycles of all the different animal groups explored throughout the unit and will provide an answer for enquiry questions. They will be encouraged to spot patterns, as well as similarities and differences, based upon the observations that they have made.
❇ MEMORABLE MOMENT
We will learn to sort and group images of different animals.
️✏️ WRITING OPPORTUNITIES
We will have lots of opportunities to write predictions, methods, conclusions etc when we undertake our investigations.
🌳 LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
We will go outside to exercise and undertake our investigations.
Unit Sequence: Learning Intentions
What does offspring mean? To notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults. Working scientifically − Identifying and classifying.
What is the life cycle of a human? To notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults. Working scientifically – Asking simple questions and recognising that they can be answered in different ways.
Are there patterns between animal life cycles? To notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults. Working scientifically − Record and communicate their findings in a range of ways and begin to use simple scientific language.
What is the life cycle of an amphibian? To notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults. Working scientifically − Identifying and classifying.
What is the life cycle of a butterfly? To notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults. • Working scientifically − Identifying and classifying.
Scientific Enquiry: Investigations
Why should I exercise?
Children learn about the heart and heart rate then complete physical activities that allow them to see the effect exercise has on our body.
How do germs spread?
Children observe how easily germs can spread through direct and indirect contact.
🏁 BIG FINISH
We will create quiz questions and compete in teams to see who can recall the most information about our Humans topic
