Autumn Term

Prehistoric Painting- Painting & mixed media

In this topic pupils will discover how and why our ancient ancestors made art, experimenting with natural materials to make homemade paints and playing with scale to paint on a range of surfaces.

  1. To apply understanding of prehistoric man made art.

  2. To understand scale to enlarge drawings in a different medium.

  3. To explore how natural products produce pigments to make different colours.

  4. To select and apply a range of painting techniques.

  5. To apply painting skills when creating a collaborative artwork.*

Spring Term

Growing artists- Drawing

In this topic pupils will developing an understanding of shading and drawing techniques to create botanical inspired drawings.

  1. To recognise how artists use shape in drawing.

  2. To understand how to create tone in drawing by shading.

  3. To understand how texture can be created and used to make art.*

  4. To apply observational drawing skills to create detailed studies.

  5. To explore composition and scale to create abstract drawings.

Summer Term

Abstract space & shape- Sculpture & 3D

In this topic pupils will explore how shapes and negative spaces can be represented by three dimensional forms. Manipulating a range of materials, children learn ways to join and create free standing structures inspired by the work of Anthony Caro.

  1. To join 2D shapes to make 3D structures.

  2. To join materials in different ways when working in 3D.

  3. To develop ideas for 3D artwork.

  4. To apply knowledge of sculpture when working in 3D.

  5. To evaluate and improve an artwork.

Art & Design Day

Fabric of nature- Craft & Design

In this topic pupils will be using the flora and fauna of tropical rainforests as a starting point, children develop drawings through experimentation and textile-based techniques to design a repeating pattern suitable for fabric.

  1. To understand starting points in a design process.

  2. To explore techniques to develop imagery.

  3. To explore using a textile technique to develop patterns.

  4. To learn how to create a repeating pattern.

  5. To understand how art is made for different purposes.
