Year 1 Languages

By the end of Year 1 children will:

  1. Listen and respond - Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by using gestures or basic responses.
  2. Begin to recognize sounds and patterns - link the spelling, sound and meaning of the words through songs or rhymes
  3. Engage in basic language - greet and leave a person, say thank you, you're welcome, yes or no.
  4. Speak - say individual words such as colours, animals or numbers for example.
  5. Develop an appreciation of stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language - enjoy these in the target language
  6. Develop accurate pronunciation - recognise that some sounds in Spanish are different to English,
  7. Follow along with a story - show understanding of individual words in a story containing Spanish vocabulary.
  8. Broaden their vocabulary - show interest in the language by seeking out Spanish equivalents for the English words they encounter
  9. Describe people, places or things - use individual words (such as colour, animal, number or family member) to describe. when prompted
  10. Mark make and begin to write - very basic individual words in Spanish
  11. Recognise patterns of sounds or written words - be able to identify a word as Spanish based on patterns of the language;
  12. Apply the language they have learnt - be able to apply vocabulary to existing and new contexts i.e identify an item's colour, number or the person.

Autumn 1 Greetings

1. Be able to greet someone [hola] in Spanish

2. Be able to leave someone [adiós] in Spanish

3. Be able to use my manners in Spanish and say thank you [gracias] and you're wecome [de nada]

4. Respond to ¿Cómo estás? with good [bien] bad [mal] or alright [así así]

5. Ask others how are you [¿Cómo estás?]

Autumn 2 Days of the week

1. Be able to recognise some days of the week in Spanish

2. Be able to practise saying specific sounds contained within days of the week

3. Be able to say days of the week in Spanish

4. Be able to identify days of the week in Spanish

5. Be able to choose the correct written word for a day of the week in Spanish

6.Be able to write the written word of a specific day of the week in Spanish

Spring 1 Months of the year

1. Be able to recognise some months of the year in Spanish

2. Be able to practise saying specific sounds contained within months of the year

3. Be able to say some months of the year in Spanish

4. Be able to identify the correct month of the year in Spanish

5. Be able to choose the correct written word for a month of the year in Spanish

6.Be able to write the written word for a month of the year in Spanish


Spring 2 Seasons

1. Be able to recognise the names of seasons in Spanish

2. Be able to practise saying specific sounds contained within seasons

3. Be able to say some seasons in Spanish

4. Be able to identify the correct season in Spanish

5. Be able to choose the correct written word for a season in Spanish

2. Be able to practise saying specific sounds contained within weather phrases

3. Be able to say some weather types in Spanish

4. Be able to describe the correct weather pattern in Spanish

Summer 2 Colours

1. Be able to recognise some colours in Spanish
